The Library Archive Vol. 4

That’s not to say that the perennial favourites of Hammond & Farfisa organ, soul flute and vibraphone are underrepresented: Dunaway’s Eyes carries a sultry vibes melody, Walter in Gabardine features Hammond the way it should be played – over an atonal funk melody – and both A Dilemma for Holbrook and Roundtree are drenched in ridiculously funky soul flute

The lead cut (and sold out 7") The Galata Extraction plays like it reads: Farfisa paired with electric guitar belts out the melody over handclaps & percussion, drums and bass. Perfect background for a Levantine thriller, this puts you anywhere between Albania and Egypt – ATA chose Istanbul.

Elsewhere, Sutherland tips the hat to Roger Webb’s extraordinary soundtrack to Bartleby, with an unsettling reprise of flutes and flexatone disrupting the driving organ lead. And where the flute of Tatsuya, the Sword sounds like nothing more than the credit sequence to a ronin anime, The Two Akiras has more of a Street Fighter II vibe to it.

Now four volumes (and a couple of singles) in, The Library Archive will eventually stand as a testament to the love the ATA producers and artists have for the original composers and performers of the great music libraries of the past.
