Led by saxophonist Rob Mitchell, Abstract Orchestra reflects the diversity of music sampled by Hip-Hop producers, combining the complexity of jazz with the simplicity of Hip-Hop. "I selected the tracks with live performance in mind," says Rob Mitchell, "So the album reflects our tour and the music performed."
Inspired by The Roots' legendary live performances and Miguel-Atwood Ferguson's orchestral arrangements for J Dilla, classic jazz techniques are blended with modern loop-based structures.
The band features top jazz musicians from northern England, who have played with artists like Jamiroquai and Amy Winehouse.
"Dilla" by Abstract Orchestra is a tribute to the influential producer. The opener "Welcome to Detroit/The Diary" uses a vocal sample from Isaac Hayes's "Man's Temptation" against lush brass and driving beats, while "Workinonit" reinterprets Dilla's original 10cc guitar samples with biting trumpets and aggressive saxes. Vocalist Anna Uhuru showcases her talent on "Stop," reminiscent of David Axelrod and Don Sebeskey's work.
The album includes 2 Dilla medleys featuring tracks like "Airworks" and "Last Donut." "Raw Shit" highlights the Farfisa organ, while "Official/Fall In Love" features stunning vocal lines from Anna & Akin. The second half takes on an orchestral quality inspired by 20th-century classical composers.
Tracks such as "Love," "So Far To Go," and the closing piece "Two Can Win" showcase Anna Uhuru's vocals, blending various styles and influences.
